Five Suggestions to Help You MARKET YOU and Stand Out

Recently I picked up a marketing book that was gathering dust. I had no idea why I kept it but thought I would peruse it and then decide if I should keep it, toss it, or donate it. Tucked in the book was the 1997 Tom Peters’ Fast Company article, The Brand of You. An interesting fact is in 2018 I had found a copy of the same article in a different book. The 2018 copy led to my writing a blog article for consultants and freelancers about being the MARKETER OF YOU. As I reread my 2018 blog article, I thought “What better time than now” to update it.

Why update? Although the COVID-19 pandemic is still with us, people are seeing light at the end of the tunnel and they are looking forward to the future. People also realize our individual pandemic experiences changed each of us. So, what better time than now to pause, reflect, and change your marketing? What better time than now to start MARKETING YOU in earnest so that you stand out as the “go to” person?

Although it is almost 25 years since Peters wrote his 1997 The Brand of You article, his recommendations are still relevant today. Additionally, many of his recommendations are similar to comments I articulate when discussing the independent worker (consultant, contractor, and freelancer) and the future of work.
